Phoenix Heat Pumps

Many metropolitan Phoenix homes are equipped with a heat pump split system that supplies both cooling and heating. Electricity is the only power source, but with today’s high-efficiency models, energy costs can be very reasonable. A Phoenix heat pump system has 3 basic components and these need to be correctly matched to work most efficiently and correctly.

The Heat Pump Condensing Unit is housed in a steel case or cabinet and is usually set on a pad next to your home’s foundation. It contains the condenser, compressor, refrigerant, coil and fan. In hot weather, the refrigerant cycles through the system and removes heat from your home. In cool weather, the process is reversed and it captures heat outside and brings it indoors. These double-duty units can be very effective here in our warmer climate.

The Air Handler is housed in a larger cabinet that looks a lot like a gas furnace. It will contain the indoor coil and a blower fan to move air throughout your home. Instead of a single air handler unit, the components may come in 2 separate units called a cased coil and a blower module.

In cooler climates, one or more heat strips may be added to the air handler. They are electric heating coils that supplement the heat produced by the heat pump. Some manufacturers also make heat pumps that are compatible for use with a gas furnace. The homeowners have the option of how they choose to heat. Hybrid systems are not as common here in the warmer climate of the Valley of the Sun.
